What is your passion for photography? Do you want to make money
at it so you can continue to shoot what you love best? Love and
money are the two main reason photographers enter into
photography and the stock photo business. It is a very
competitive industry and the sooner you learn the ropes, the
closer you are to
making money. But if you have no experience, where do you start?
The Making Money in Stock Photography workshop is designed for
photographers eager to enter into the world of stock
photography. This workshop is taught by industry veteran,
Charlie Borland . Charlie Borland has been a
commercial photographer for over 25 years and has had his stock
imagery published thousands of times in advertisements,
editorial, and publishing markets. His stock photography has
been represented by over 10 different agents and he is currently
Director of Photography at online stock agent Fogstock.com.
This
intensive week long workshop will cover everything from; what
makes a good stock photo, to who buys stock photography, and how
do they use it. You will gain understanding of the types of
equipment you will need to meet what the market demands in
quality. You will learn how to think of your photography in
concepts, and to shoot for your clients, even though you may not
know those clients. You will learn how to organize and market
your labor of love as well as how to approach a stock agent. The
goal is to give you a thorough understanding of what stock
photography is, to recognize a saleable photo, and which markets
will make you money."I sold
my first image from the workshop within 90 days!"

We’ll spend our mornings and afternoons discussing stock
photography and our evenings shooting it. We’ll provide models
on several days to help you capture your stock photo ideas and
concepts. And the best part is, the models will provide model
releases so you can market and sell your images from the
workshop. You could easily recoup your workshop expenses by
selling your images.
Here is a tentative schedule of what the week will
cover:

Equipment
The Stock Photo workshop is for film and digital photographers
and proper equipment is crucial to your successful workshop
experience. You will need a SLR camera with interchangeable
lenses. The variety of lenses is up to you, but a wide angle
through telephoto lenses are good choices, such as 28mm up to
200mm. If you have longer and wider lenses, be sure to include
them. Other useful equipment: a flash, a Flexfill type
reflector, a tripod, are all accessories that you will find
useful for shooting. You will also need a laptop computer with a
minimum of 256 mb RAM and 512 mb RAM would be better. You should
also have at least 1gigabyte of compact flash card space, more
is better, and/or a portable, rechargeable hard drive to
download in the field. You also need a means to download your
images to your laptop, either by cord or CF Card adapters.
We will provide basic instruction in Photoshop and having it
will aid you in editing and retouching your images. It is not
mandatory to have it if you use another editing program. If you
do not have Photoshop CS3, follow this link and download the 30
day free trial.
http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp Do this
several days before you leave for the workshop so you may use it
for a few weeks after the workshop. Photographers shooting film
should note that film processing is slow in Bend and that you
will not be able to have your film done before our morning
editing session.
